A Tribute to Eddie Laird Snr

The new generation of young footballers that are progressing through the ranks at Plunkett Park find themselves surrounded by the best coaches, state of the art training facilities and a wonderful youth structure.

Looking back to the not so distant past however, we can recall a time when resources were at a premium and the many times when men were called upon to manage numerous teams form U12 right through to Senior level.

This took some commitment and in this regard, there were arguably none more so committed to the Plunketts than Eddie Laird. So here, on the first anniversary since his passing, is “Our Tribute To Eddie”:

Eddie was born on the 4th of June 1928 to his parents Patrick and Annie Laird of Sion Mills. He met his wife Gretta and they married in 1952. They went on to raise 11 children, 6 boys and 5 girls. Baby John died in infancy.

Eddie and Gretta had 15 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Originally from Sion Mills, Eddie’s his first job was working for North West Timber Company. He then started working for the forestry and worked his way up to foreman and instructor. Eddie was Northern Ireland Tree Falling Cutting Champion from 1960 – 1968 and was Cross Cutting Champion on several occasions.  Clearly, he was a highly skilled man in his profession.

Eddie loved his football; he played for Newtownstewart and won the junior championship in 1953. He was chairman, secretary and manager of this club for several years.

Eddie and Gretta and family moved to Pomeroy in 1968. This was a big step for his family but Pomeroy welcomed the Laird family quickly. He started his lawnmower and chain-saw business, people from all over the North came to get their mowers and saws fixed with Eddie.

An ardent GAA follower, he soon became involved with Pomeroy Plunketts serving as Chairman, Vice – Chairman and Secretary. He took charge of the underage teams and he brought the minors to the county finals in 1973. He was manager of the reserves that went to the finals in 1984 and 1987, and also helped manage the senior team in the 70’s. One of his proudest moments was playing with his four sons against Donaghmore in 1986, aged 58. He was part of the management in 1991 when they won the intermediate championship.

Eddie played for the Plunketts for several years and became physio for the club. He held his first aid certificate for over 50 years and many a young boy he helped back on the field. Eddie also served on the county board in the 60’s and 70’s. He was a long time member of the Pomeroy Plunketts and was honorary vice president of the club. He also started the hurling in the club in the 80’s both seniors and youth.

Eddie was proud to see the Plunketts win the Ulster championship and going to the All-Ireland final in 2004/2005.

He was also an ardent Tyrone follower and was so proud to see his beloved county win the Sam Maguire in 2003, 2005 and 2008.

Eddie started the youth club in Pomeroy in the 70’s and 80’s in Begley’s Hall. This was a great impact to the Youth of Pomeroy of all ages. He was involved in the bowls in Pomeroy, winning several trophies. He played with his sons Eddie (Jnr) and Kieran.

It was with a great sadness that we learned of the passing of Eddie Laird Snr on the 26th of November 2010, so shortly after the death of his beloved wife Gretta of 58 years, who died on the 7th of June 2010.

Everybody who knew Eddie was immediately aware of what a gentleman he was. He is sorely missed by all of his family and friends and anybody who had the privilege to know him. Eddie was so proud of his wife Gretta and family. A legend and true friend to all and will be sadly missed.

Eddie Laird Snr RIP 4th June 1928 – 26th November 2010.

Many thanks to Kieran, Aimee, Deirdre and the extended Laird family.

. I started working for the forestry in 1958 age 15. I was cross cutting champion in I think 61 and 62 and was axe felling champion in 1963 when it was held at Hillsborough co. down I knew Eddie very well , I use to work under him when he was foreman. I’m sadden to hear of his death. He was very skilled at tree felling. I moved to England 1965. I’m now 73 years old. Nice to reflect on those years of long ago.

    Kind regards George
