Seniors
Pomeroy 2-9 Rock 1-9
Driving rain failed to put a “dampener” on the end result for The Plunketts as the seniors secured two vital league points at Plunkett Park on saturday afternoon. The weather conditions certainly didn’t help this local derby in what turned out to be a poor game. Slippery conditions and driving rain left players struggling to hold possession on both sides which meant free flowing football was at a premium.
Rock started brightly, dominating midfield and picking up an early goal that Marty McCreesh could do little to stop. Justin Lambe managed to get loose of his marker’s shackles and within five minutes kicked over a fine point before blasting home to the roof of the net after fine work from Brendan Cunningham and Ciaran McKenna on the right flank.
Rock responded with 3 unanswered scores from play and 2 pointed frees before Brendan Cunningham broke free from 45 yards to take an angled point on the run. Mark McKenna registered 2 points from distance (1 free) before Ciaran McKenna managed to get one on one with the keeper and with a shimmy to the left, slotted home from close range to leave the half time score Pomeroy 2-4 Rock 1-5.
A woeful first 15 minutes of the second half saw The Plunketts lose the lead as the visitors pulled it back level with 2 early scores. Indeed it took a bit of defensive inspiration to come of the bench as Brendy Burns made an excellent break to point from the right. Rock responded with their last score of the match leaving it perfectly poised for both sides to get the win. The Rock maintained possession for long periods of the second half until Ciaran and Rony McKenna both put in tremendous effort for the last ten minutes with Ciaran bagging a vital goal and point while Rony made some excellent interceptions on the left wing. The “Hand Of God” appeared in the form of Denver Nugent on two occasions as he helped over a Brendy Cunningham free and late on as he took the insurance point with a cool fisted score. Despite a late scare in front of goal from a last minute 14 yard free the lads held out for a vital win.
Best for the Plunketts were Rony McKenna, Ciaran McKenna, Marty McCreesh, Brendy Burns and Brendy Cunningham.
Team & Scorers: Marty McCreesh, Aidan Cunningham, Mickey Quinn, Marty McKeever, Brendy Conway, Ciaran Cunningham, Rony McKenna, Mark McKenna & Jarleth Quinn, Sean Murphy, Brendy Cunningham (0-1), Ollie McCreesh, Justin Lambe (1-1), Denver Nugent (0-2), Ciaran McKenna (1-2). Reserves
Pomeroy 1-8 Rock 1-6
A fine team effort, which forced this young reserve side to dig deep, was just what was required to fight off a spirited Rock St Patricks side at Plunkett Park on saturday afternoon. JP and Felix had to “shuffle the deck” somewhat and when called upon the boys were up for this derby match.
Emmett Campbell weighed in with a hefty return of 1-4 whilst Darren wallace caused all sorts of problems for the Rock defence. Solid displays from a full back line containing Dominic Kelly, Rony Quinn and Mickey McDonald ensured that the lads ran out winners.
Team and scorers: John McCourt, Dominic Kelly, Rony Quinn, Mickey McDonald, Brendy Burns, Joe Cunningham (0-1), Gareth McAleer, John Loughran & Niall McKeever, Ciaran Mullin, Seany Nugent, Kevin Armstrong (0-1), Darren Wallace (0-2), Emmet Campbell (1-4), Charlie Corcoran . Subs: Eunan McCourt for Corcoran, Ruairi Molloy for Nugent, Hugh McNamee for Mullin.
