MINORS

1.10 – 1.9

Our minors made Plunketts history when they beat Ardboe in the Grade 2 Minor League final in Healy Park on Sunday 24th October. This game makes them double title winners, having beaten Newtownstewart in the championship. Congratulations to our all the boys who were involved with the squad, to their management team of Brendan Fullen and Kevin McKenna and to their loyal supporters on being involved in this historic and memorable occasion. This was definitely a game of two halves and one of the most intense and exciting games, having everyone on the edge of their seats until the end whistle. The Plunketts refused to lie down and had to dig deep into their recesses to rise above some adverse challenges, but every player stepped up to the mark and even above it throughout this game. Ardboe were quick out of the blocks and scored their first point within the first minute and then easily converted a free to a score. Ronan Quinn put over our first score from a free and then Hugh McNamee put over our next point in the eighth minute. Unbelievably captain Ronan got his second yellow in the tenth minute and had to leave the field. The Plunketts rose to the challenge and covered all bases. Ardboe were able to put over three more points before Sean Quinn and Brendan Burns put over scores for the Plunketts. Ardboe continued to push forward and got three more points in the last five minutes. In extra time, Hugh Pat received a very heavy shoulder and we left the field at half time down four points down, playing with fourteen men and wondering if Hugh Pat would be able to play the second half. The first half was very tight with Pomeroy being able to contain Ardboe but missing some vital scores. Half time score 8-4. Whatever Brendan and Kevin said to the boys really lifted them because the Plunketts came out a different team in the second half and attacked from the start whistle, John Loughran securing our first point in the third minute. Ardboe found a hole in our defence and got a goal in the fifth minute, putting them ahead by six points. But brothers Francis and Brendan Burns each added to the Plunketts score line bringing that down to four. The play was all for Pomeroy and the boys were not going to go out without a fight and showing why they were in the final. Pearse Quinn put over a lovely point and Sean Quinn put over the next score to close the gap to two points. Eddie Corcoran passed over a great ball to Francis Burns who powered it into the back of the net and for the first time in the game we were ahead. Ardboe for only the second time in the second half were able to penetrate our defence and put over their last score to even the game, but with a hunger on the Plunketts they drove forward and Sean Quinn put over a point to secure the win before the final whistle. TEAM; John McCourt, Ryan Begley, Hugh Pat McGeary, Colm McGuone, Michael Mills, Ronan Quinn (CAPT) (0-1), Brendan Burns (0-2), Sean Quinn (0-3), John Loughran (0-1), Francis Burns (1-1), Hugh McNamee (0-1), Eddie Corcoran, Pearse Quinn (0-1), Ciaran McGeary, Damien Woods.
