It was obvious from the throw in that this was going to be a bruising affair as a strong, physical Eskra team were not going to be walked over like so many other teams that the lads have put to the sword this year.
Playing in sweltering conditions both sides traded early scores with Emmet Campbell pointing from 2 early efforts. Eskra managed 2 from play and one from a soft free in front of goals. Darren Wallace knocked over a free from distance and Colm McGuone picked up one on the run after a neat exchange with Seany Nugent. A point from an Eskra free was followed by a major as they broke to find the net. Campbell replied with some damage limitation for the home side but a late Eskra point left the half time score Pomeroy 0-6 Eskra 1-5.
With all to do in the second half Pomeroy started well with consecutive points from Stevie Colhoun and McGuone both from play. Eskra picked up a score from a long way out before Pomeroy managed to get a foot hold on proceedings with fine scores from Emmet Campbell, Brendy Conway and substitute Ryan Loughran. Pomeroy looked in control taking the lead despite an Eskra point from play.
Then in the 49th minute, disaster for the Plunketts, as a low drive from the Eskra forward deflected to the home side’s net as Anthony McKenna and Joe Cunningham tried in vein to clear. Gareth McAleer stroked over a fine 45yard free from the ground but 2 scores from play in the 21st minute left the Plunketts trailing. Niall McKeever put over a fine effort before Rony Quinn drove over in front of goal with 2 minutes to play. It wasn’t to be though as Eskra pulled away to seal the victory with a late free kick. Final score Pomeroy 0-14 Eskra 2-11.
