Seniors V Urney – Match Report

The seniors came through a bruising encounter with Urney to claim a home win on Sunday courtesy of a sparkling second half display by Justy McCaffery in woeful weather conditions. A slow start was witnessed by the supporters in attendance as both teams struggled to adapt to appalling weather with almost any attempt at a long ball or shot at goal from distance being swallowed up in the swirling wind. The home side were playing towards the Parkview goals. The Plunketts registered first however with a fine Ollie McCreesh point after a neat exchange with Ciaran McKenna and the Edendoit man was on hand almost immediately to counter an Urney free kick with another point on the run. Scores and free following football were at a premium after those early exchanges and despite a score from John Loughran coming in from the left after a long run, Urney broke and scored a goal to leave them 1 point ahead going in at half-time Pomeroy 0-3 Urney 1-1.

The Plunketts had wind advantage in the second period playing in to the pavilion end but that didn’t seem to bother the visitors who started the second half strongly with a free kick on the 20 yard line. Frank Burns managed a score from a tight angle and Justin McCaffery opened his account for the day with a pointed free. Urney were awarded a dubious penalty to say the least with 10 minutes played and Tyrone’s Johnny Lafferty dually dispatched to the bottom right just past John McCourt’s outstretched arm. Justy McCaffery came to the fore at this stage knocking over 2 quick points from play and red card for an Urney midfielder for a second bookable offence seemed to drive the homeside on as we took control with 15 minutes to play.

Hugh McNamee put one over on the left and that was followed by score of the day from corner back Aidan Cunningham who pointed from a ludicrous distance. Urney replied with a score from play which was quickly cancelled out by a fine Hugh McNamee point from an acute angle on the left hand side. Ollie McCreesh, having a fine game in the black and amber, popped up to register his 3rd of the day and Ciaran McKenna was denied a goal when closed down by the Urney keeper on a one v. one prior to Urney’s final point from play.

A fine finish for the homeside was kick started by Hugh Pat McGeary as he pointed after a 50 yard run. Justin McCaffery stroked over a free from 20 yards on the right  and finished off a fine individual performance with a great score off the left boot from play.

It was a close call for most of the game with little between the sides but the Plunketts finished strong in the final third to claim a vital win. Final Score Pomeroy 0-14 Urney 2-4. Team and scorers: John McCourt, Aidan Cunningham (0-1), Brendan Cunningham, Denver Nugent, Kevin Armstrong, Brendan Burns, Hugh Pat McGeary (0-1), John Loughran (0-1) & Jarleth Quinn, Hugh McNamee (0-2), Justin McCaffery (0-5), Frank Burns (0-1), Kieran McGeary, Ciaran McKenna, Oliver McCreesh (0-3). Subs: Gareth McAleer for Kieran McGeary, Sean Quinn for Armstrong.

Next up for the lads is a local derby away fixture against the Rock St Patricks on Friday night.
